From 2003-2011, our Sign Language Project funded transportation costs for a group of Deaf children to attend weekly Sign language classes in Stone Town (the historical city of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site). In these classes, the children had the opportunity to interact with adult Deaf role models and develop friendships and peer groups with other Deaf children from around the island.
The project also instructed family members, friends, neighbours and local school teachers in Sign language, enabling them to interact with the children. This greatly increased the children’s involvement within the village. One of these children, now a young woman, is able to care for her family’s chicken business. Another young man trained to become a prep-cook!
